Fairy Falls is Yellowstone’s most popular trail, and we have combined this hike with the trail to an overlook of Grand Prismatic Spring, one of Yellowstone’s most iconic sights!
We’ll cross the Firehole River, and then make our way through the Midway Geyser Basin, past several smaller hot springs, until we get to a side trail which heads up a hill to an overlook of Grand Prismatic Spring. The vistas from the viewing platform are spectacular, and you will wonder at the myriad colors which make up the pool.
We’ll go down again, and pass by the far side of Grand Prismatic Spring, the side which most visitors to Yellowstone do not get to see. There is a turn off from the main trail to a secondary path, which will take us to Fairy Falls, through a forest of young lodgepole pine trees. This part of Yellowstone was badly burned during the great fire of 1988.
Fairy Falls is 200 feet (61 metres high), and the trail there is 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometres) one way. The path is pretty flat all the way, with the exception of the walk up to the Grand Prismatic overlook.
We offer two other hikes which take in Fairy Falls. The one only goes to Fairy Falls, while the other visits Fairy Falls but also continues on to Imperial Geyser
