This hike goes to both Mystic Falls as well as an overlook of Biscuit Basin from up high. If you’d rather do just the Mystic Falls hike, and omit the Biscuit Basin overlook, please take a look at the Mystic Falls hike.
There are two places you can start the Mystic Falls hiking trail, and we’ll give you a choice as to where you want to begin. One of the options is to actually start the trail at Biscuit Basin, and this might be an idea for those who don’t have much time in Yellowstone and may otherwise not see Biscuit Basin. The other choice puts you off the beaten path immediately.
Whichever you choose, you’ll find yourself walking through a beautiful mixed conifer forest, before picking up the Little Firehole River. Mystic Falls is about 70 feet (21 metres) and is formed when the Little Firehole River plunges down from the Madison Plateau, over a cliff.
After exploring Mystic Falls for a while, the strenuous part of the walk starts, with a hike up some switchbacks to the peak of a hill overlooking Mystic Falls. The vertical gain is about 500 feet (152 metres). We’ll walk along the top of the hill until we get to a spectacular overlook of the Biscuit Basin area. You can see as far back as the Upper Geyser Basin, and make out geysers and other thermal features in the distance!

There is an even steeper switchback on the way down the hill, until we meet up with the
original path, back to the trailhead.

The trail is about four miles (6.4 kilometres) long, and is reasonably flat, or has a small incline as far as Mystic Falls, from where you can expect the climb described above.
We also offer another two longer hikes, which visit Mystic Falls. They both start at Old Faithful, and include the Daisy Geyser Trail and the Artemisia Trail. The difference is that one of them goes to Mystic Falls and then turns around, while the other visits Mystic Falls, and continues on to the Biscuit Basin overlook.
