The Lone Star Geyser trail is an enjoyable hike along an old service road to Lone Star Geyser. The trail follows the Firehole River to the geyser. This is one of very few trails in Yellowstone where bicycles are allowed, in addition to people hiking.
The trail is about 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometres) round trip. The trail is slightly downhill on the way out. Not only do you have the sights and sounds of water accompanying you along the way, but the surrounding forest provides respite from the summer sun.
We generally prefer to time our hikes to geysers to coincide with the geyser’s predicted eruption time, but Lone Star’s eruptions are very seldom predicted. It does erupt approximately every three hours, and if you want to watch it erupt, we’ll need to wait until it does. It’s always possible to ask people coming the other way if they’ve seen it erupt, and if they have, we’ll get a better idea of just when the next eruption may be.
