The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone south rim hike, along with its counterpart on the other side of the Yellowstone River, the north rim hike is one of the most spectacular hikes you can take anywhere, not just in Yellowstone!
Think about it: one magnificent river, two towering waterfalls, a spectacular canyon, a mature forest and ending up at the aptly named Artist Point!
This trail is about 1.8 miles one way, but the time it takes varies enormously as there are so many incredible views and photo opportunities along the way. There is a detour available from the main trail, to Uncle Tom’s Trail, which is a steep trail with a vertical descent of 500 feet (152 metres), about three quarters of the way down the side of the canyon. Uncle Tom’s is currently closed, but if and when it opens again, we can consider taking guests there, if you are up to the climb back up.
The south rim hike is relatively easy, but you are at altitude, and you may find yourself out of breath at times. There are some up and down sections, but nothing too strenuous, unless we do the Uncle Tom’s Trail.
At the start of the trail, you’re just about at the level of the Yellowstone River, but with the river dropping through the Grand Canyon, and you climbing, by the end of the hike, the river is some distance below you, making for spectacular sights.
The trail provides great views of both the Yellowstone Upper Falls, as well as the Lower Falls. There are vistas of the Yellowstone River flowing through the canyon almost all the way along the hike, which ends at Artist Point. It is here that the best views of the canyon can be seen.
There are a number of options to get back to the vehicle, and we will discuss these beforehand. The price includes either walking back along the road to the vehicle, or your guide walking to pick up the vehicle, while you admire the views at Artist Point. The third option is to hike back the same way you came, along the trail. There is an extra charge for the last option, which you can see at check out.
