The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim hike, along with its twin across the Yellowstone River, the south rim hike, is one of the most beautiful hikes anywhere, not only in Yellowstone!
This hike is longer than the south rim hike, and there are more up and downhill sections. Like the south rim hike, the north rim trail also traverses a section of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, following the Yellowstone River as it makes its way through the canyon.
You will see additional waterfalls on this side of the canyon, in addition to the Upper Yellowstone Falls and the Lower Yellowstone Falls.
The trail goes past the brink of the upper falls, as well as a turn off to a separate trail which leads down to the brink of the lower falls. The path to the lower falls is steep and some people struggle on the way back, so we’ll need to discuss if this is right for you, or whether we should bypass it, and continue on with the main trail. The view at the bottom is great though!
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone north rim trail has numerous vistas of the canyon and the Yellowstone River, including the three main viewpoints, Lookout Point, Grand View Point and Inspiration Point. There is a switchback trail from Lookout Point which descends to a closer view of the Lower Falls. Once again you can choose whether you want to do this separate little trail, as the way back is also steep.
The hike continues to Grand View Point before heading alongside and through a forest to Inspiration Point, where the trail ends.
Depending on who you believe, the hike is anywhere from 3.1 miles to 3.8 miles (five kilometres to 6.1 kilometres) long, one way, and takes about 2.25 hours to three hours one way. We normally drop off a bicycle at the end point, and your guide will ride back to pick up the vehicle, but there is an option to hike the trail both ways, for an additional charge.
