Most people who do the Fairy Falls hike don’t know there is a relatively new extension to the trail, which takes you to Imperial Geyser and Spray Geyser. This hike visits both Fairy Falls and Imperial Geyser. If you just want to hike to Fairy Falls without the geyser extension, please check out the Fairy Falls hike.
There is another hike which visits Fairy Falls, but that one also climbs up to a tremendous overlook of Grand Prismatic Spring.
The Fairy Falls trail is probably Yellowstone’s most popular hike. Located on Yellowstone’s lower loop, the trailhead is right on the Grand Loop Road.
We’ll cross the Firehole River, and then make our way through the Midway Geyser Basin, passing by the far side of Grand Prismatic Spring, the part which most visitors to Yellowstone do not get to see.
There is a turn off from the main trail to a secondary path, which will take us to Fairy Falls, through a forest of young lodgepole pine trees. This part of Yellowstone was badly burned during the great fire of 1988. The path is pretty flat all the way.
After wandering around Fairy Falls for a while, we’ll continue on over open meadows and through a forest to Imperial Geyser. This is a smaller geyser, but it exists in one of the more colorful environments you’ll see, surrounded by a beautiful pool, with vibrant bacteria mats streaming off it.
The return hike passes close to Spray Geyser. The Fairy Falls and Imperial Geyser trail is a 2.8 mile (4.5 kilometre) round trip trail.
