Just a few minutes from the crowds of Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin is a trail which not only takes you to Solitary Geyser and a unique view of Old Faithful, but also gets you out of the hustle and bustle of thousands of people, to peace and tranquility, only a few hundred yards away!
It is hard to imagine that you can be in the forests and all by yourself, in such a short distance from Old Faithful, but you can. The first part of the trail takes you on a short hike to the Old Faithful Observation Point, which involves a vertical gain of 200 feet or 61 metres. It goes without saying that we time the hike to coincide with when Old Faithful has been predicted to erupt.
The rest of the hike is a loop trail through the forest, along which we will visit the aptly named Solitary Geyser, before dropping back down the hill, and rejoining the boardwalks at the Upper Geyser Basin. We will pass many thermal features along the trail, on the way back to Old Faithful.
The Solitary Geyser and Old Faithful Observation Point trail is 2.5 miles (four kilometres) long. If you don’t have that much time, we have another hike which omits Solitary Geyser, and only goes to the Old Faithful Observation Point.
