There are two places you can start the Mystic Falls hiking trail, and we’ll give you a choice as to where you want to begin. One of the options is to actually pick up the trail at Biscuit Basin, and this might be an idea for those who don’t have much time in the area and may otherwise not see Biscuit Basin. The other choice puts you off the beaten path immediately.
Whichever you select, you’ll find yourself walking through a beautiful mixed conifer forest,
before picking up the Little Firehole River. Mystic Falls is about 70 feet (21 metres) and is
formed when the Little Firehole River plunges down from the Madison Plateau, over a cliff.
The trail is 2.4 miles (3.8 kilometres) long and is either flat or has a small incline on the way there. You would walk the same distance back.
If you’d like to see Mystic Falls but do a more taxing trail, we have another version of
this hike where you continue from Mystic Falls up a hill and take a loop around to an overlook of Biscuit Basin from up high. The switchbacks take you up 500 feet (152 metres) vertically, and the loop adds an additional 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) to the hike.
We also offer another two longer hikes, which visit Mystic Falls. They both start at Old Faithful, and include the Daisy Geyser Trail and the Artemisia Trail. The difference is that one of them goes to Mystic Falls and then turns around, while the other visits Mystic Falls, and continues on to the Biscuit Basin overlook.
